How to Switch from harmon.ie Classic to New harmon.ie – Best Practices
New harmon.ie is a modern web add-in designed to work seamlessly with all versions of Outlook, including New Outlook and Outlook for Mac. It offers a refreshed UI, improved cross-platform support, and simple deployment with automatic updates, making it easier than ever to manage your emails and documents within Microsoft 365.
When to Switch to New harmon.ie?
- Future-Proof Your Workflow: If your company is transitioning to New Outlook or if you need harmon.ie on Mac, switching ensures continued productivity.
- Flexible Adoption: Teams can mix and match—some users can continue with harmon.ie Classic, while others migrate to New harmon.ie.
- Work Side by Side: You don’t need to stop using harmon.ie Classic—both versions can run in parallel.
What Will Be Different for Users?
1. Feature Set – What’s Still in Progress?
While New harmon.ie is actively evolving, some features are not yet available. Here are the main missing features, for the full list, read our harmon.ie Classic vs. New harmon.ie.
- Drag & Drop Limitations:
- Drag & dropping emails and files to upload them to Microsoft 365 or to create email links currently work in Outlook Classic and Outlook for Mac.
- In New Outlook, use the “Save Message” action to save emails and attachments to Microsoft 365. And the “Add as Attachment / Link” action to add files to email messages.
- Save on Send: Not currently supported. You can save a sent email from the Sent folder in Outlook.
- Shared Mailboxes: Not yet available.
2. Sidebar Placement in New Outlook
Unlike Outlook Classic, the sidebar cannot be added to the New Outlook main ribbon. Instead, it appears in the message ribbon. Select an email to open New harmon.ie from the message ribbon button.
Best Practice: Pin the sidebar to prevent it from closing when switching emails.
3. Opening Saved Emails and pdf files
harmon.ie Classic saves emails as .msg files. New harmon.ie saves emails as .eml files, which offer better compatibility across platforms.
By default, both email types as well as pdf files open in New harmon.ie in a web browser.
harmon.ie uses the OneDrive desktop app to open pdf and email files locally. OneDrive should be installed and the machine and the users should be logged into the app.
Deployment & Provisioning Considerations
1. Sync Your Sites & Favorites
To ensure a smooth transition, it’s recommended that harmon.ie Classic version 10.6 or later will be installed for all users switching to New harmon.ie. This version automatically syncs your sites and favorites with New harmon.ie, reducing setup time.
2. Simplified Deployment
New harmon.ie is managed and deployed via Microsoft AppSource and the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, making deployment straightforward and efficient. It benefits from automatic updates, ensuring users always have access to the latest features and security enhancements without manual intervention. Read How to Deploy New harmon.ie: Step-by-step Admin Guide.
3. Provisioning Considerations
Provisioning New harmon.ie is not done using registry keys, but instead by placing a .json file in a dedicated “harmon.ie Files” document library. Configuring New harmon.ie is limited compared to harmon.ie Classic. If you need other configuration options, please contact support@harmon.ie. Read Centrally Configure New harmon.ie for All Users to learn more.
4. Email Header Mapping
New harmon.ie can automatically map email headers to SharePoint metadata when saving emails to Teams and SharePoint.
If you previously configured email header mapping or email views in harmon.ie Classic, some adjustments may be required to ensure they function correctly in New harmon.ie:
- Email Views: If your existing views filter content to display only .msg files, update them to include .eml files as well, as this is the format used by New harmon.ie.
- Email Header Mapping: If you use custom column names for storing email headers, you’ll need to configure email header mapping in New harmon.ie accordingly. Learn how to configure custom email header mapping.
