This article explains the steps required to centrally and remotely provision harmon.ie for Notes.
An administrator can:
- Set default startup values, that the user can later change.
- Force values for the user, which disables them in the harmon.ie preferences dialog, preventing the user from changing them.
How is provisioning done?
There are two methods to provision harmon.ie for Notes to all users:
- By adding keys to the harmon.ie registry tree. Windows provides a few methods for centrally updating registry keys. Read Distributing Registry Changes to learn how.
- Using the Domino server.
To set default values using the registry:
What can be centrally provisioned?
- SharePoint sites: Add and configure SharePoint sites. Sites can also be provisioned using the user profile service.
- Document options: Control the Sites view and navigation.
- Favorites: Set favorite locations.
- Upload options: Options for uploading documents to SharePoint.
- Email options: Options for uploading emails to SharePoint.
- Search options: Options for searching on SharePoint.
- Updates options: Control the Updates view
- People options: Control the People view.
- Yammer integration options.
- General options: General harmon.ie settings.
- Usage data: Options for collecting and sending harmon.ie usage data.
- harmon.ie labels and images: Options for rebranding harmon.ie with your company's name and logo.
harmon.ie root key:
The root key under which the administrator should add the harmon.ie keys is:
- For provisioning the product for the current user only: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mainsoft\Prefs\.
- For provisioning the product for all users on the machine, the exact location is different for each operating system, as shown in the table below:
OPERATING SYSTEM | KEY |
---|---|
32-bit | HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mainsoft\Prefs\ |
64-bit running 32-bit Office | HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Mainsoft\Prefs\ |
64-bit running 64-bit Office | HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mainsoft\Prefs\ |

To force values for users using the registry:
To force a value for the users, and disable it in the harmon.ie preferences dialog, add a new value to any of the harmon.ie keys listed above:
KEY NAME | VALUE NAME | VALUE TYPE | VALUE DATA |
---|---|---|---|
< any > | Force | DWORD | 1 |
Note: To force a favorite location, define the Force value in the key FavoriteList\<name>. Defining the Force value in its subkeys has no effect.
To provision URLs:
We expect this URL format for provisioning a SharePoint site:
If a document library or folder name is specified, they are trimmed from the URL.
We expect this URL formats for provisioning favorite locations:
- http://<server>/<site>/<document library>/
- http://<server>/<site>/<document library>/<folder>
Note: Do not specify aspx pages or query parameters.
Tip: You can open the SharePoint location using harmon.ie, right-click it and select Copy > Address to get the exact URL.
Site provisioning example:
Registry definition for a site called Site A:
The site is added to harmon.ie:
How administrator and user preferences are combined?
To build the list of sites available in the harmon.ie sidebar each time IBM Notes starts, the SharePoint sites defined in the registry are combined with the sites that the user configured via the harmon.ie preferences.
This is true for building the favorite locations list as well.
Administrator preferences, set in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, do not take precedence over user preferences, unless the administrator definesforced values. Specifically, if the user changed his preferences, and the administrator provisioned the product afterwards, the user preferences are not replaced.
Administrator preferences set in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, do replace the preferences set by the user. Unless the administrator defined forced values, the user can overwrite the preferences using the harmon.ie preferences dialog.
To set default values using Domino:
This section explains how to use the Domino policy-based system administration to centrally provision harmon.ie preferences for users. These preferences are stored in a standard desktop policy settings document, which then can be assigned to users either as organizational policies or as explicit policies.
What can be centrally provisioned?
- SharePoint sites.
- Document Publishing options: select content type, warn on missing properties, ask to check in files.
- Email settings: prompt to replace attachments with links.
To configure SharePoint sites:
You can use the Accounts configuration in the Desktop policy settings to integrate SharePoint sites into the Domino policy infrastructure.
- From the Domino Administrator, select the People & Groups tab and open the Settings view.
- Click Add Settings and select Desktop.
- Go to the Accounts tab, and add a new account for harmon.ie:
- Give a name for the account.
- Specify SharePoint as the account Protocol.
- Specify the Server Address of the SharePoint site, as explained below.
Server address parameters:
Set the Server Address of the SharePoint site in this format:
http://<sp-site>[?useWindowsAuth=true][?BrowserAuthentication=true][&hideSubSites=<true/false>][&useOWA=<true/false>][&defaultSocialServer=true].
- <sp-site>: URL to the SharePoint site you wish to configure.
- useWindowsAuth: Set to configure harmon.ie to connect to the configured site with the user’s Windows credentials. This option is only available when running on a Windows operating system (optional).
- BrowserAuthentication: Set to configure harmon.ie to connect to the configured site by prompting the user to enter his credentials via a browser. This option is recommended in case of connecting to Office 365 SharePoint sites (optional).
- hideSubSites: Set to configure the visibility of sub-sites and workspaces. By default, sub-sites and workspaces are displayed. If you do not specify the hideSubSites parameter, each user will be able to set its value in the harmon.ie preferences (optional).
- useOWA: Set to configure the ability to open Office documents in the SharePoint Office Web Applications. This parameter should be set only if the SharePoint site was pre-configured to use Office Web Applications for Office documents.
- defaultSocialServer: Set to configure the site as harmon.ie social server (optional).
Here is an example for a server address: https://demo.mainsoft.com?useWindowsAuth=true
Note: You can configure multiple sites using this procedure.
To configure Managed Settings:
With Domino 8.5 or later, you can use the Managed Settings section of a desktop policy settings document to configure some of the preferences of the behavior of harmon.ie.
To use Managed Settings, do the following:
- Create a desktop policy settings document.
- On the Custom Settings tab, open the Managed Settings tab, and click Edit list… to specify the relevant values according to the table below.
- Click Add/Modify Value, and save the document.
- Assign this desktop policy to users.
