Contracts, proposals, design specifications, manifests, and other types of documents are key tools for doing business. In the course of business, many people contribute to these documents by providing edits, feedback, criticism, and eventually consensus. But getting everyone in the organization ‘on the same page’ has been a challenge. Document management systems like Microsoft SharePoint have done much to bring order to document chaos, through streamlined handling of document revisions.

In parallel, the recent introduction of enterprise social networking has let workers reach out to colleagues to get advice and provide feedback speeds collaboration cycles. However, document collaboration and social networking are largely independent efforts.
