Gartner Research has just released a report highlighting six areas cited by Gartner clients as ‘functional shortcomings’ in Microsoft SharePoint. The report, entitled "Ecosystem Partners That Can Help you Mind Six Gaps in SharePoint" identifies the shortcomings and profiles vendors of tools that can plug them. And this problem is apparently acute; Gartner's data indicates that 90% of organizations using SharePoint face a challenging decision: either manage the complexity of a SharePoint system augmented by custom code, or use third-party add-ons to fill the gaps in SharePoint.
The report highlights SharePoint shortcomings in the following areas:
- Administration and Compliance
- Workflow Automation and Business Process Management
- Remote BLOB Storage/External Storage Management
- Mobile/Device Support
- Records Management
- Taxonomy/Classification
The report also covers the important topic of “Understanding Add-On Support Costs and Avoiding Lock-In” for SharePoint.
